What is Chapekar Brothers Movie About?
Chapekar Brothers is a historical drama film that tells the story of the Chapekar brothers, Damodar, Balkrishna, and Vasudeo, who were inspired by the nationalist leader Bal Gangadhar Tilak to fight against the British rule in India. The movie shows how they planned and executed the assassination of W C Rand, who was appointed as the Plague Commissioner of Pune during the bubonic plague outbreak in 1896. Rand was notorious for his oppressive and brutal measures to contain the plague, such as entering private houses, examining and segregating people (including women) in public, vandalizing properties and religious symbols, and preventing movement from the city. The movie also portrays the aftermath of the assassination, how the brothers and their accomplices were arrested, tried, and hanged by the British authorities.
The Plot of the Movie
The movie begins with a flashback scene where Damodar Chapekar witnesses his father being killed by a British officer for protesting against a tax hike. He vows to take revenge on the British and joins a secret society of revolutionaries led by Tilak. He also convinces his younger brothers, Balkrishna and Vasudeo, to join him in his mission. They learn how to make bombs and firearms and plan to target Rand, who is responsible for the atrocities committed during the plague.
On June 22, 1897, the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria's coronation, Rand and his military escort Lt. Ayerst are returning from a celebration at Government House. The Chapekar brothers ambush them near a bridge and shoot them with pistols. Ayerst dies on the spot and Rand succumbs to his wounds later. The brothers escape but are soon identified by informers and police officers. They also kill two informers and attempt to kill a police officer who tries to arrest them.
The British authorities launch a massive manhunt for the brothers and their associates. They arrest Mahadev Ranade, who was involved in making bombs for them, and torture him to reveal their names and whereabouts. They also arrest Tilak and charge him with sedition for inciting violence through his newspaper articles. The brothers are eventually captured after a fierce gunfight with the police. They are tried by a military court and sentenced to death by hanging. They are executed one by one in April and May 1899.
The movie ends with a voice-over narration that says that the sacrifice of the Chapekar brothers inspired many other freedom fighters to rise up against the British rule in India.
